No, the Radeon HD 4850 is meant to compete with the Geforce 8800GT, 8800GTS, and 9600GT, not the GTX260 or GTX280.
With Crossfire, the HD 4850 does pretty well--definitely not being destroyed by either of the last two mentioned graphic cards... It performs well or so-so depending on the game, though...
