I still say the hype was proportionate to the words of the reviewers (people often focus on numbers versus the actual text - much why I say the numerics should go). An example of something that promised more than it delivered was No Man’s Sky. In Spider-Man’s case, arguing for overhype, based on 3, 4, or 5 points is just silly. 87 is a very high grade, but far more importantly, the game has delivered. Thus, it received a proportionate amount of excitement.

Another thing to look at is the sheer number of reviews a title gets, the larger the volume the  likelihood of the score dropping increases.
