I skipped the Xbox one after having owned both the OG Xbox and the 360. I was a huge Halo and Gears fan with Reach actually being my favorite game in tte Halo series. Halo 4 sort of lost me. Microsoft's big blunder at E3 before launch and PS3's strong final run with Uncharted 3 and the Last of Us swayed me over to the other side.

I was going to get an Xbox One S  late last year just to play Halo 5 and Gears 4 but the metacritic scores for Halo 5 and my obsession with Zelda swayed me towards a Switch purchase. Perhaps this year on Christmas I can get a good deal on the Xbox One S. The point is I am not a casual gamer even with my limited time to play these days, Xbox just hasn't provided a compelling reason for me to invest money on one of their consoles. That's the most rational explanation for their small user base.

Most Xbox One owners that I know are truly Hardcore Xbox fans. One pretty much has to be, the PS4 was the more powerful system at Launch with the greater library of exclusives so only the Hardcore stuck by Microsoft during those days. So there is truth to MS PR statement.
