Apparently in the Lord and Miller cut of the film, they had turned her into a joke.  Rumors are that this did not please Kathleen Kennedy, as well as the fact that they made the film more comedic in nature, which is why they were fired and Ron Howard was brought on.  She was changed into a serious character.  This is why there are interviews with the cast, like the woman who played her, talking about how L3-37 is a good role model and should be looked up to.
