Well microsoft didn't win a format war with their console neither does the console encourage the sales of their other products i.e PSP , HDTV's

PSPs don't count. That product is also part of the games division.

As for Blu-ray, the PS3 has definitely helped that gain traction. Time will tell how it all pans out for Sony.

HDTVs, I'm not so sure about. I think those would be selling anyway. It's possible that the PS3 has marginally helped sales but given consumer trends, I think it would have happened anyway.

Still, $3.4b is a lot of money. It's going to be very difficult for Sony to get that back from the PS3 itself.

Anyway, both Sony and MS had their heads jammed pretty far up their asses when they started this generation. I don't see how either of them ever expected to turn a profit.

They assumed the greatest graphical details and processing power would be the keys, so they spent loads to make the systems as powerful as they could, but put on the breaks almost too late to make them affordable.

Nintendo was right on the money about those not being important. Good graphics and processing are enough. Good games come first, same as on the other systems.

EDIT: Again, not knocking anyone. We have emperical evidence that the Wii is making loads more than the other systems, and that it was the higher powered components that made the other systems cost so much.

The Playstation 3 was so expensive at launch because they tried to cram in the Blu-Ray; so that it(Blu-Ray)could be successful.Next year Sony will start making a profit,if they can manage to keep the same price point or lower it to a profitable one.So another 5 years and Sony will have made all their losses back with the PS3,and start fresh with the Playstation 4; at a $399.99 price point.
