I'm sorry, but this is extremely dumb and commonly repeated by uneducated right wingers. The US is a republic that is democratic, albeit representative. A common definition of a democracy is this: "Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives". One does not exclude the other. It is not a direct democracy, but a democracy nonetheless. People who say what you just said should excuse themselves from American political discussions.
