Personally I go via general research, word of mouth and user reviews than swearing an oath to just Metacritic scoring. Plenty of games out there I've enjoyed that Meta thought were garbage in the site's eyes.

I use Opencritic with a very picky selection of reviewers that I allow into my own personal OC scores. Anyone can post a user review, but they are a bit more trustworthy on steam since people have to buy the game to review it anyway.

How many games have you played? I've been a multi-console user, and a retro-gamer since 2005. Having access to damned near everything ever made has made me really picky at times. And I just don't have time to play all the games in the world. I already spend $75 a month on games, and that's with a 27% to 42 % discount at Best Buy (Pre-Ordering for a $10 bonus + 6% Cash Back + 20% off Gamer's Club Unlocked + Double Best Buy Points on game purchases).

I only go by user reviews if the game has glaring faults that others have experienced, apart from that I go via site and personal reviews from friends who have tried said games, but most of the time it's down to what interests me and what reviews point out as pros/cons.

I've been playing games since I was 5-6, so around 24-25 years total. I've only become picky due to how everything has either been pasted, played safe, done poorly, played poorly etc. With a game like this though, there isn't much for me to even begin to be picky about, seeing as how we don't have many games that specifically target the Theme hospital style gameplay and look of the original. We also have devs who worked on the original game working on this one, so I've far more faith in this game than say anything EA could churn out, as they have zero of the original staff for most of their old IP's by now.

I don't have all the time to play them all either, which is why I just play what appeals to me at that given time, rather than making some list of games to play first and ones for later (because that kills the excitement factor and makes it feel like a chore to do).

The devs have also pointed out they are giving a 10% discount to those who wish to pre-order the game. I'm not since I dislike that practice and would rather give the devs the full amount for the work they've put into the game.
