Its just the tech.... open world is to games today what side scrolling platformers were to games back in the 80s. In truth open worlds has been exactly where games have been going since they staret making 3D levels.
I think calling them all "open world" is a recipe for disaster though, as there are different takes on. Like theer is open world and open linear. One is a sandbox(LOZ, GTA, Witcher, Elder scrolls, Horizon...etc) and the other is is just very big small sections that could very well be seen as levels (GoW, SoTC, Uncharted, Bloodborne....etc).
And in truth, only single player games are required to truly have dozens of hours of content, simply to prevent people from selling them the next day. The alternative is to have multiplayer in the game that keeps people playing for weeks. Can't you see how COD has a campaign thats only like 5-6hrs long?
