Interested? A little. My problem with the current tech is the amount of set up involved, and let's be honest, that will always be a limit for really hig quality VR, since you are trying to integrate fantasy space with real space.
Future of VR? I think VR has a limited future, until we have a huge shift in the tech lie no more headsets, it will always be a tv strapped ro your face. we have been strapping headsets tomour faces since the late 80s at least, and if you reach back far enough the first tv you could strap to your face dates to the 1960s! I feel it is pretty well proven mainstream audiences are not interested.
VR Games? Maybe a western rpg as one person said. I used to think a fighting game like Street Fughter would be neat when i was a teen, but now I tHink it is a perfect exampke of the limits. imagine the motion sickness doing Chun Li's upside down spinning bird kick? not to mention itis physically impossible to keep up with the moves of those characters.

How was it proven that mainstream audience is not interested? I would suggest, that most are not aware  of it's capabilities or it's too expensive for them.

First person Street Fighter wouldn't really work. But it could by viewing the fight from a bystander in the crowd controlling the character from there.
