I think theres a middle ground here.

Freedom of speech is important, but knowingly deceiving/lying to the public is not. With that said, it's very subject to corruption when you make an institution to classify what is truth and what is not. It would be ideal, but if there is someone disonest in there it would quickly descent into opression.

Lying isn't protected by free speech especially in more serious matters but people are entitled to their opinions so that can't be used as an excuse to limit free speech. Alot of the people who are against free speech are nonsensical.

In reply to the corruption part, that's what checks and balances are for within the government. Also by preserving our liberties and limiting the scope of the government's power, we ultimately limit what a corrupt person can do.  I agree that we need to curtail corruption but that won't happen with people knowingly voting for them.

Not to be funny, but the US is definitely not an example of how to combat corruption.  That couldn't be any more obvious right now on the age of Trump.

But we are going off topic. I think both Freedom of speech and the truth should be protected. Knowingly lying to the masses is what i don't consider to be part of "freedom of speech". I consider it deceit and thus a crime that should be punished.

Just so this doesn't get taken to the ridiculous, cause there's always a guy... That doesn't include meaningless lies. I mean lies that can lead to power shift in the country. They should be severely punished in order to send the message that it's not ok to manipulate voters.
