Up to 1994 the World Cup had 24 teams, so the tournament mode was the same as it was for Euro 2016 with six groups of four and the four best third-ranked teams making the cut. 1994 also had a group where three teams finished with six points; nowadays one of them would be eliminated, but back then it didn't matter. On a related note, the World Cup used several different tournament modes and different amounts of participants, so the timespan from 1998-2022 will have been the longest by far when it comes to usage of the same tournament mode.

Sweden's best result was second place at the World Cup 1958 in Sweden.

The four best 3rd-ranked teams, I see.

And yeah, I edited in (in my lifetime) as I've watched them in every World/Euro Cup since then. Even with Zlatan they never seemed to reach the same level they had in WC 94. I didn't feel like they were mainly just lucky. I thought they deserved that bronze medal. And because the final between Brazil and Italy was fairly dull (0-0) until the penalty shootout drama, I also found some of Sweden's knockout phase matches more entertaining.

By the way, going back to what you said about "If Colombia and Senegal play a draw while Japan loses to Poland, then Japan will be eliminated because Colombia has the better goal difference.", I guess that means it doesn't matter that Japan beat Colombia?
Some tournaments prioritize who won between two tied teams before it's decided by goal difference.

3 situations would guarantee Japan advance.

1.Japan beat Poland

2.Japan draw Poland

3.Senegal beat Colombia.

But if Japan lose and Colombia draw Senegal, Colombia will advance due to the better goal difference. In UEFA rules though Japan would have been the team that advances.
