Edit: They'd have to lose by the same score though, not just the same goal difference since goals scored come into play after goal difference. So if one lost 2-1 and the other lost 1-0 the team that lost 2-1 would finish 2nd on account of having scored 1 more goal.

That's very interesting.
That means that Japan are guaranteed to advance to the next round as long as they don't receive any more yellow cards? They can even lose the match on purpose. (Although I presume that wouldn't count as fair play if it became obvious.)

Goal differential comes before though, so if they lose by a ton it won't be good for them.
