It goes completely against the core gameplay, which is Tennis. Sure there are special shots and such but purposefully breaking the racket is beside the point of the sport. And the consequence is also stupid. It's as if you are kicked out of the race if you get hit by too many shells in Mario Kart. More isn't always better and there is already plenty of depth in the game.

Good games achieve depth in gameplay without adding more and more features, but by having a solid foundation.

Well, it's only one extra way to win the game. Try playing something like the DBZ TCG where there's 5 to 7 different ways to win the game. It was supposed to be about beating the crap out of your opponent and doing epic energy attacks. It wound up being all about winning via nonsense that had nothing to do with fighting.

Anyway, I think racket breaking is fine, but if they added any more ways to automatically lose the game, it would be really annoying. "Hey guys, so we've added this new mechanic called energy! Once your tennis player runs out of energy, they collapse and forfeit the match! You can make your opponent lose energy by taunting them! " And suddenly taunting people until they are dead, becomes the main focus of the game instead of scoring points.

Yeah the racket breaking doesn't bother me, especially since you have the option to just let the opponent win the point. I learned that the hard way after having to forfeit a really close match after breaking too many rackets lol.
