A digital version of Scythe, the hit board game, has launched on Steam Early Access

Retro-futurist mecha game Scythe has finally come to wide release on Steam, entering Early Access yesterday. An adaptation of one of the most popular board games of the last few years, Scythe is a 4x that sees players vying over the fictional landscape of eastern Europa in the 1920s. A highly strategic game that focuses on encouraging players to adapt their overall tactics to the board as it develops, Scythe is beloved by many board gamers for its combination of unique visuals and thematic gameplay. It won a slew of awards, from 2016's Golden Geeks to the Origins Award.

 

The Culling 2 is coming

Developer Xaviant pulled the plug on the battle royale game The Culling in December 2017, just a couple of months after taking it from Early Access to full release. Today, the studio revealed that a sequel, The Culling 2, is now in development.

Many BioWare fans were bummed when the studio confirmed there are no romance options in Anthem, its upcoming shared-world looter shooter. As lead producer Mike Gamble told Game Informer, "we're moving away from that for Anthem." However, BioWare general manager Casey Hudson told VentureBeat that romance isn't necessarily dead.

 

Black Ops 4's DLC maps are locked in a season pass, and players aren't happy

The Call of Duty community is in an uproar over Activision's plans for Black Ops 4 DLC, which will see post-release multiplayer maps locked behind a "Black Ops Pass". The pass will include a "bonus Zombies experience" called Classified plus four more "all-new Zombies experiences," four exclusive Blackout characters, and 12 multiplayer maps. As numerous unhappy threads on the Black Ops 4 subreddit have pointed out, that's going to split the community between those who are willing to pony up for the pass, and those who are not.

 

Fallout 76's 'Country Roads' will be sold on iTunes to raise funds for charity

The first teaser for Fallout 76, as is the tradition, started out musically: In this case with a cover of John Denver's 1971 classic Country Roads. I can't say that it grabbed me in quite the same way as The Ink Spots, but I really like what Bethesda is doing with it outside of the game: The cover track will be released on iTunes on July 4, with all funds raised going to support Habit for Humanity.

The Dying Light 2 announcement at Microsoft's E3 press event was made significantly cooler by the surprising news that cold fusion-powered RPG writing machine Chris Avellone is working on it.
But Avellone isn't the only talent working on the game. "We also got some additional help in the form of the former The Witcher 3 writing team," Techland told VG247. "Those guys were responsible for some of the best quests from that game including the Bloody Baron quest line. All of those guys are working very hard to create a narrative—it’s like a puzzle to play with."

Edmund McMillen has been busy. Six weeks ago, he released the final free content booster pack for The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+. A few weeks prior, he and James Id released the first trailer for their upcoming match-four dungeon-crawler, The Legend of Bum-bo. And a few weeks before that, McMillen said his delayed, cancelled and now revived game Mewgenics is back on track. Apparently McMillen's still got free time, though, because judging from a recent string of tweets, he's got a new multiplayer game in the works.

We got a bit of hands-on time with Metro Exodus during E3 week. The survival FPS from 4A Games is bigger than both the earlier Metro games put together, and is structured differently, too: while there are linear portions of Exodus, there are also large open world areas where players can freely explore. There's also dynamic weather and a day-night cycle.

The Underhollow, the Dota 2 battle royale with cheese mode that was announced in May, is now live. The new mode is available exclusively to owners of the 2018 International Battle Pass, a multi-level offering for Dota fans that also includes new modes, sprays, a Cavern Crawl, and other rewards.

 

Final Fantasy 7 remake skips E3, director vows it's 'not just in early concept stages'

Despite making the right noises earlier this year, Final Fantasy 7's much-anticipated remake was one of the no-show games of E3 2018.
In conversation with The Verge, director Tetsuya Nomura has now assured would-be players that, while developing the reimagining alongside Kingdom Hearts 3, it is "actually in development" and "not just in the early concept stages."

Resident Evil 2 remake will include Tofu, Hunk and that big bastard alligator

The Resident Evil 2 remake may have lost some its B-movie charm (see above), but it'll still feature some of its most fantastical characters. As reported by Polygon, Tofu, Hunk, and that massive mutant alligator that, don't lie, scared the total shite out of you on first encounter will return come January 25, 2019.

 

PUBG map selection scaled back following Sanhok testing

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds introduced map selection in April, which allowed players to choose between its Erangel and Miramar arenas for the first time. "We'll still have to keep a close eye on it," said developer PUBG Corp at the time, "since it could become problematic as new maps continue to be added."
Following its fourth round of testing, the developer says it will scale back map selection options when Sanhok lands later this month.
