The writing's on the wall though. More and more games are going the service route. Devs want everyone in the same ecosystem. The bigger a userbase, the longer a game can survive, the longer it survives the more DLC $$$ it makes.

Sony got away with giving Minecraft and Rocket League the middle finger. It'll be interesting to see how they treat FIFA, GTAonline and CoD going forward.

You're forgetting something very important in this. Devs/pubs make more money when gamers buy the game and dlc for it on multiple platforms multiple times. The small devs are willing to bend over backwards in some cases to get as many players as possible but that wouldn't ever happen in something like cod.

Yeah, I'm sure third parties are furious that Nintendo consolidated their home/portable systems. You're using old business models. Didn't Rocket League become big on consoles after Sony gave it away for 'free'? RL, GTA, Minecraft and Fortnite all sell for less than $60 even though they're all good enough to command full price? It may be true that GaaS/Free to Play models can't work for big budget/annualised games but given how much GTA online and Fortnite make ($300M/month = 5M sales @ $60), it's hard to compete with free/discounted when the market is in the billions. Never say never.

Also, some of you are conflating cross play with this when it's not specifically related to that.

You're correct. No-one's really bothered about PS4-XB cross play. I doubt Switch owners are that concerned about playing with PS4 either. The outrage is from PS4/PC/Mob players who didn't know that connecting to their PSN account would lock their accounts out of the only serious portable option for Fortnite. Ironic that the 'virus' that locks people out of their skins was itself a free skin. It's the definition of a Trojan Horse (Beware Sony Bearing Gifts!!)

Edit: I'm actually with the Sony fans on this one. I fully support Sony's decision to block accounts/crossplay.
