Both are brilliant, though I enjoy playing through the Rare trilogy more frequently than Retro's.

A few things always bothered me about the Retro games..

  • the crap bonus rooms and how the levels music restarts after you do it
  • no animal buddies other than rambi
  • DK, Diddy, Dixie and particularly Cranky are all soulless compared to the Rare games. Cranky isn't even Cranky. In complete contrast I like how much love Ubisoft has given DK and Cranky in the new rabbids DLC.
Tropical Freeze however is far superior to Returns. Returns had more levels but a significant minority of them were dull, particularly in the earlier worlds.
What I love about Rare's trilogy are the secrets within a secret and secret last bosses and the animal buddies, and I like how Diddy, Dixie and Kiddy aren't relegated to a power-up.
I know that sounds uber picky but i do love the Retro games a ton! They're both so good.
Oh also, i played the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 3 (along with 1 and 2), but boy is it good! They add an extra world and Dave Wise does a completely new soundtrack which sounds amazing even on the GBA! The version might even dethrone DKC2, worth checking out!
