I've heard people say that this is Microsoft's last proper console. I can't say I've heard anyone say that this is Microsoft's last Xbox-branded hardware. Those two can be very different things. I wouldn't be surprised at all if MS's next console is a range of "Xbox certified" PCs that allow developers to optimize their engines better than PC games, while undercutting the cost of PC ownership by passing on the savings of mass-producing PCs to consumers. Kinda like MS's version of Steam Machines, except more tightly controlled. |
I would actually not mind them taking Xbox in a more PC-oriented direction (provided Microsoft creates a proper TV mode UI for Windows 10; and interacting with games is more seamless like it on consoles). In many ways, the Xbox One, if it had support for things like Win32 apps and such, would have been the perfect desktop PC (it is relatively small, relatively inexpensive, it is a gaming device with games optimized for it, it is relatively quiet).
