It always has been normal. This isn't the first time and it won't be the last. Some of them do it because they want more attention for their "cause" or because they really believe their issues are more important than any other. We get articles about some weirdo running for office every year.
And it's fine. It's a consequence of the freedom to run for office with alternate ideas. Better to have crackpots who will never be elected run for office than to have politicians putting restrictions in place in order to protect the status quo.
