ESA president defends loot boxes, warns against government regulation

Entertainment Software Association president Michael Gallagher defended loot boxes during an address at the recent Nordic Game Conference, telling the audience (via GamesIndustry) that the effort to regulate them as a form of gambling "challenges our industry's freedom to innovate, and impairs our ability to continuously test new business models, which drive creativity and engagement with our audience."

Wow. Who is he trying to fool with this? Regulations limit the shit that you can do? No shit, that's what they're for. Much like the ban on slavery limited people's freedom to make money off of unpaid workers. It's a miracle that any industry still exists today.

Indeed.

I want to believe that he said that because members of the industry are against the idea of having to deal with gambling laws, not because he believes in what he said. Still, it's amazing (and not in a good way) how many people have no clue on what world we live in and why some laws and protections are in place.

But of course, it's the US, where apparently some people still believe that anything is ok if it's good for the business.
