Yeah, plenty of signs that this is real. I'm really interested in the idea of a reboot rather than a remake and I'm interested in how they're going to change things up. Not that hot on Go functionality; I'd assume that's optional. My guess is the only mechanic they really integrate is the streamlined catching for wild Pokemon, with tougher Pokemon (i.e. legendaries etc) requiring that you fight them and weaken them to catch them. My one concern would be that Game Freak haven't pushed the Switch very far technically; that kind of conservatism is typical of them.

I'd like to see this become a game as service, especially if it meant a new region was added each year (or available to buy).

EDIT: Capitalising on Pokemon Go also makes a great deal of sense. Given 750 million people downloaded Go, you only need to reach a tiny percentage of that userbase to add new customers to Pokemon's main games and to the Switch userbase. A conversion rate of ~0.5 to 1% would mean anywhere from 3 to 8 million new Switch users.

It only makes sense if you assume that audience is even remotely interested in paying $360 to play a beefed up version of a modest pass time.  That most of them stopped playing over a year ago.  If they fully gut these games to water them down for the Go audience, they will be setting decades of history on fire for not much in guaranteed return.  A pointless gamble since a core Pokemon RPG would be guaranteed for 15mil sold.

Um. Nowhere did I suggest they'd gut the game or change it completely and nowhere is it suggested they're completely gutting the franchise to appeal to Go owners. From my perspective I mainly meant the shift in branding to "Let's Go!". And, like I said, to attract several million new customers, you don't really need to have a high success rate. Up to 1% would mean several million new consumers and anything above that would be very impressive.

Whether this is a 'core game' or not has me leaning towards core game - they could easily be using the 3DS game engine and assets upscaled to HD, with new animations, textures and lighting models. Sun/Moon actually looks quite good running in Citra, for example. Additionally, Game Freak have never developed anything other than the main-series RPGs when it comes to Pokemon games. If this was a spin-off, it wouldn't be coming from Game Freak and it wouldn't have Junichi Masuda in charge.
