That is why the PS4 Portable would not be a 2nd platform, it would be a Portable PS4. Everything would be shared, as they would be the same. A PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro, and a PS4 Portable are all the same device, you just choose the form factor, and performance level that suites your needs. The days of creating seperate platforms, based on a seperate architecture, and a seperate OS are over. Now it is about unification. Shared Hardware, Shared OS, Shared Software. That is why Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all developing scalability across every aspect of their ecosystem. They know they have to offer a wide range of expereinces to suit as many consumers as possible. That is not going to happen with a One Home device or One Portable. It requires allowing people to get the expereince they want, at the price they want. Their ecosystems have to extend from the $100 super casual market, to the $1,000 enthusiast market, and they are slowly expanding their platforms to reach as many people as possible.
This is what I see going forward in the near future; PS4 Super Slim - $199.99 PS4 Pro Slim - $299.99 PS4 Portable/Mobile - $299.99 - $399.99 PS4 Premium or PS5 - $499.99
I believe Sony wants to get their OS and Network to as many users as possible. I think PS5 will use the same OS as the PS4 (With some PS5 Exclusive features). I think PS4 and PS5 will have a shared Games library (Again, with PS5 versions having extra bells and whistles). As an example, I believe God of War 2 and Horizon will launch across the entire PlayStation ecosystem. PS4 and PS4 P/M will offer 900p/30, PS4 Pro 1800pCB/30, PS4 Premium or PS5 4K/60fps. At some point Sony will break away from the PS4, but I don't think it will happen for years. The base PS4 tech which the PS4 Portable would theoretically be based around will be a viable platform for 720p - 1080p/30fps games for many years to come. In fact, I could see Sony continuing to support PS4 up to the launch of PS6, at which point the Base PS5 and PS5 Mobile devices would become the new super casual entry point to the PlayStation Ecosystem. |
You can't fit PS4 hardware in mobile form factor any time soon (2-3 years at least) from couple of reasons (hardware is too big for mobile form factor, it would heat too much for mobile form factor, battery life couldn't last even one hour).
