Not really. smash on wiiu looks a generation better then the 3ds version, there is a huge reason to buy both versions for fans of the series.

That's because the 3ds isn't as powerful... Because it's a hand-held... I really feel like I shouldn't have to explain this yet.... Here I am.

 

Cross generation titles exist. BotW on WiiU and switch aren't separate games just because the Switch version looks better. Totals added together.

 

As for the buying both versions... Pokemon. Totals still added together.
