I think Sony and Nintendo both did great jobs analyzing why their respective failures (PS3 and Wii U) and doubling down on where they were most successful. Sony caught heat for a high price and low game output. They spent the majority of last gen investing in First Party Development and by the time we came to the PS4 everyone had some sort of experience or trade mark game on the PS4 that gave them freedom and leverage. Nintendo held back on launching Killer IPs on the Wii U and saved it for the Switch launch.

I didn't know ps3 was a failure, It did bad in its first years but thought it was ok, it ended selling more than the Xbox 360
