You should probably ask if Russia can sustain a full scale war ? NATO has a total of 15 aircraft carriers and lot's of naval forces to surround Russia but NATO equipment is also far more modern than Russian equipment as well ... (Why else is Russia scrambling to find as many naval bases as possible ?)
I would be surprised if it took the US and it's allies more than year to turn Russia into rubbles ...
It's also funny you should point out the US's failure in Afghanistan when Russia (they were far bigger as the Soviet Union) got their asses handed to them earlier AND was much closer to their home turf ...
