Didn't santa Monica blow 50m on a new ip that failed and had to be canned? Sony are probably the ones that encouraged them to make another god of war and in all liklihood greenlit a more modern gameplay approach after seeing the success of uncharted and the last of us. 

Actually it was the complete opposite. Sony were the ones who didn't want a new God of War game at all, it took Santa Monica Studio a lot of convincing for Sony to finally let them do it.  We should all just be glad Sony actually finally listented to them since we get an amazing game out of it.
