DRM isn't mandated on Steam.
They do offer a very light implementation of DRM, for the devs who do want it.
Perhaps it would be wiser to be angry at devs using DRM, rather than a platform that aims to accommodate as many people/companies as possible.

That's BS, every time you do a fresh install you have to log in to Steam online to authenticate your copy ...
