Friday news, part two:
Surviving Mars adds free camera, birth control policy, tribute to Stephen Hawking
https://www.pcgamer.com/surviving-mars-adds-free-camera-birth-control-policy-tribute-to-stephen-hawking/
As outlined in this forum post, a huge number of tweaks, nips and tucks comprise the latest 'Spirit' update (I count ~100 or so)—including adjustments to mod implementation, UI and in-game mechanics.
Hearthstone: The Witchwood will launch next week
https://www.pcgamer.com/hearthstone-the-witchwood-release-date/
The time for brewing your janky evens-only deck is almost over. Next week you'll be watching it get stomped by Cubelocks on ladder because Blizzard has finally given The Witchwood a release date: April 12.
Apocalypse Cow is a 2D action game that plays like a blood-drunk cartoon
https://www.pcgamer.com/apocalypse-cow-is-a-2d-action-game-that-plays-like-a-blood-drunk-cartoon/
Its main villain is a cybernetic cow and its protagonist is a young girl with hair like blue taffy, yet Apocalypse Cow bills itself as a "cinematic" game. I can't say I got that impression when I played a bit of it at GDC, but I do agree with developer Monsters on one thing: it's a fun little 2D action game.
Retro platformer Timespinner looks ambitious and authentic
https://www.pcgamer.com/retro-platformer-timespinner-looks-ambitious-and-authentic/
Timespinner is a 2D Metroidvania-style platformer proudly inspired by the likes of Mega Man X, Star Ocean and of course Castlevania. It stars a young time-bender named Lunais seeking revenge against the evil empire that killed her family and banished her to a foreign world.
'Violence is your last resort' in stealth roguelike Basingstoke
https://www.pcgamer.com/violence-is-your-last-resort-in-stealth-roguelike-basingstoke/
"Basingstoke is a town in England, renowned for its charming mix of handcrafted and procedurally generated features," according to developer Puppygames. Now, I've been to the UK, and while Basingstoke is a real town located near London—a city whose twisting streets often feel procedurally generated—I'm not sure I believe the studio on this. That said, Basingstoke is also a top-down stealth roguelike set in an oddly adorable version of the town that happens to be overrun with aliens and monsters. Now you've got my attention, Puppygames.
See a mud crab waiting for the subway in this weird The Elder Scrolls: Legends - Morrowind launch trailer
https://www.pcgamer.com/see-a-mud-crab-waiting-for-the-subway-in-this-weird-the-elder-scrolls-legends-morrowind-launch-trailer/
The Elder Scrolls Legends expansion Houses of Morrowind went live today after a slight delay (from March 29 to April 5), bringing the strange land of the Dunmer to Bethesda's fantasy CCG. The expansion is notable not only for its incorporation of the studio's best RPG setting, but for the underlying changes it makes to the mechanical side of the game, including the addition of three-attribute cards which necessitate the use expanded deck sizes.
Destiny 2 developer: "We are actively working on a new weapon system right now"
https://www.pcgamer.com/destiny-2-new-weapon-system/
I caught a little bit of yesterday's Bungie Bounty PC stream, in which players tried to queue into and beat the developers in order to earn an exclusive emblem. Far more interesting than the actual gameplay was the atmosphere—which today's 'This Week at Bungie' blog post describes as "supercharged" for the two-hour duration. The word I would use is "spicy", as fans in chat made the most of the chance to put their questions and concerns to sandbox design lead Josh Hamrick and senior crucible designer Kevin Yanes.
The Division studio Massive is reportedly working on a battle royale title
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-division-studio-massive-is-reportedly-working-on-a-battle-royale-title/
(...) Who wouldn't want part of that lucrative PUBG / Fortnite pie?
But according to Swedish games website Game Reactor, Ubisoft is already on the case. And sadly, it won't be a Rayman battle royale game. The studio at the helm is Massive Entertainment, they of The Division fame, and according to the report, Ubisoft tasked the studio with investigating potential battle royale games in January.
Sea of Thieves is getting invite-only crews because 'players are misusing the brig'
https://www.pcgamer.com/sea-of-thieves-is-getting-invite-only-crews-because-players-are-misusing-the-brig/
"Players are misusing the brig for various reasons," says executive producer Joe Neate in this blog post. "The most common of these we have seen are to hold a slot, either because they want to play as a private crew or because they want to play with people with mics/people speaking the same language."
In order to fix this, Neate says he and his team are working to "allow players to select whether they want their ship to be open to others being matchmade with them, or closed so that it's invite-only."
Vermintide 2 dials back difficulty with latest update
https://www.pcgamer.com/vermintide-2-dials-back-difficulty-with-latest-update/
When we quizzed Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund about Vermintide 2's punishing difficulty last month, he told us he and his team were working to "remove the extreme spikes". The first-person Skaven-slasher's latest update, patch 1.0.5, tackles this head-on. Expect buffs to all five playable classes and nerfs to its deadliest enemies, among other things.
