I gagged a little. What's left-wing about liberalism? Especially in its contemporary form of neoliberal economics, there is nothing left-wing about it.

 

Liberalism in its original form is an enlightenment movement, itself a derivation of capitalist and prior utilitarian and merchantilist ideas. It predates the ideological divide of left and right, which is why you can be a liberal on both ends of the spectrum, and none (eg libertarian anarchism).

 

Hard-right is more ideologically compatible with liberalism than hard-left, by the way (at least at the level of economic policy and ideology, not human rights). Hard-left politics typically infringe on individual (economic) liberty, such as state socialism (aka communism).
