PS+ is a rental service.

Wrong, it is a subscription service.

Probably a more adequate name,

Steam is a rental service.

Wrong, it is a digital distribution platform with DRM. Just like the PS store.

Not exactly the same, Steam uses always online DRM. You have to connect to Steam every X weeks to renew it. PS digital copies don't need to do this verification. If both services were turned off and no patches were issued, only Steam games would stop working after a while.

Want to keep a game? Buy it on disc, problem solved.

... if those games are playable without all those online patches and if you don't care about DLCs and online modi.

The differences between digital and physical games get smaller every year.

Unless the game is online-only, I've played all my disc games before the day one patch was downloaded. So claiming that physical copies are not superior in that sense is not true. And I'm not even talking about resale value and trading.
