Super Mario Sunshine:

At launch, people play: “This game is shit! Worst Mario ever!”

A little after, Gamecube defence patrol: “It’s not that bad, look at world 4 section 16, pretty cool 2 minute segment, AmIright?”

Even more later, Gamecube defence patrol: “You know what, you might not remember, but Sunshine was actually better than Mario 64 in some ways.”

After Mario Galaxy, everyone loves Mario Galaxy, Gamecube Defense Force returns: “These games are great n’all, but it’s no classic like Mario Sunshine? AmIright? Poll people!” and like 14% agree with Sunshine Spartacus over here.

Mario Odyssey gets announced, Sunshine Spartacus’s rebellion has spread to youtube: “Mario Odyssey for the first tone is a sandbox open world classic that everyone has been waiting for since the last sandbox open world classic Mario Sunshine, which is in my opinion the greatest Mario Game ever made?” Some people agree with Sunshine Spartacus, the rest of us are left scratching our heads.

Some of us pop Sunshine back in to play after Odyssey on the chance that Sunshine Spartacus of the Gamecube Defence League is right. The response after playing: “Goddamn this game sucks!”

Sunshine was great, and I liked it a lot more than 64. I can still play Sunshine, but I cannot stand playing 64 anymore due to the clunky controls and relative simplicity. This is another example of games on the N64 not aging well, but other games on Gamecube doing better.

I think Mario 64 and Donkey Kong 64 are the only major N64 titles I dont like anymore due to either dated design or controls.  I can play them on basis of nostalgia, but i'm coasting on memories there. But, games like F-Zero X, Kirby 64, and the Zeldas are still fun on it.
