And gaming was really beginning to hit the mainstream around there, so N64 and PS1 were the first consoles to become mega hits. As such, Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII were both the first experiences people had with their respective franchises - two of the best franchises of all time.
Also, two of my favourite games ever are Final Fantasy VI and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. These are the two SNES games in each respective franchise, and games I think are superior to the N64 and PS1 equivalents. That said, I actually do think Final Fantasy VII is a great game, but I think Ocarina of Time is simply a decent game with a lot of problems people tend to overlook.
