At this point, I'm just going to say it will be flat out stupid for anyone to think the PS5 will come before 2020.

It makes absolutely zero sense that sony would do that. They have absolutely nothing to gain by doing something like that.

I mean outside fan wet dreams or conspiracy..... what tangible reason dows anyone have as to why they think sony will launch the PS5 in 2019? Why? They are the market leaders, and are yet to see a drop in yearly PS4 sales, oushing onto an install base of almost 100M, selling more software than ever before (which is where the money is)' know they don't have to worry about either of their competition till at least 2020 (MS just released the X1, they arent going to release another console in 2019 and its now obviois that the NS isn't taking away from PS sales).

So why would sony throw all that away and rush into a new gen?

I expwct the PS5 no sooner than 2020... could even be as late as 2021.

Why did they "rush" into next gen when the PS1 sold ~21M the year before the PS2 launched, and had only been out for a little over 5 years?  Why did they "rush" into next gen when the PS2 sold ~20M the year before the PS3 launched, and had been out for ~6 years?  To use your logic, they should have held off those next gen machines by 1-2 years.  The real answer as to why they would do it is to stay relevant and advance as technology advances.  Sony isn't going to stay still just because their current console is selling well, just so someone else can fill that void.  In 2019, there's a good shot Sony can put out a PS5 that is ~2x the power of the X.  That would be ~2.9x the power of the Pro.  But, more importantly, it would be ~6.5x the power of the OG PS4.  That definitely warrants a gen leap.

There's also the fact that those who adopted early in 2013 for $399, will be those looking to upgrade in 2019 for $399-$449.  Those who adopted mid-gen for $299-$349, will probably wait to adopt at that price, too.  Then, you always have late adopters who can only justify buying or can only afford to buy at $149-$199.  They will wait for PS5 to hit that price, too.  Sony covers every spectrum of adopter.  Sales keep coming in for both machines, while the PS brand stays fresh and known for power, as far as consoles go.

This is the fan service type ideology I'm talking about. Where some people say things simply cause they sound good. Let me give you reasons as to why what you are saying wouldn't happen.

  1. This isn't the PS1/PS2. Its a very different world today than it was then. With the PS1 sony and nintendo and even sega were all competing in the exact same market. Its like people forget the dreamcast was released a year before the PS2. And the gamecube was just aroind the corner. And even tjis new thing called the Xbox. Releasing early then (or late if you consider the dreamcast) was very necesary to consolidate their market share and momentum.

The PS2 was the same story, MS forced their hand by releasing the 360. Even when sony released a year later, it wasobvious they weren't ready for the new gen. Also, look how much the PS3 cost.

  2. Anything sony can do in 2019, it will cost them less to do in 2020...... but more importantly, everything anyone is saying about what sony can do on 2019 is all dependent on the availabilitu and adoption of 7nm fabrication tech. Yes, thats the ONLY affordable way to have a console that is at least twice as powerful than the XB1X. Now that tech isn't available anywhere at all. And this is 2018.

More importantly when it does become available its going to cost sony way more per chip in its year of availability than it would in the year following that. This has to do with yeilds. You see, when sony pays for chips, they pay for wafers not the chips themselves. So say ideally you can get around 100 chips per wafer and ur paying approx $100/chip it means sony is paying $10,000 for every wafer. Now if that wafer only produces 80 usable chips due to manufacturing infancy..... sony will still be paying $10000/wafer. See how thats a problem?

  3. Sony is not sitting down doing nothing by waiting. Its like people don't get that its simply IMPOSSIBLE for sony to release a PS5 with around 2 times the power of the XB1 and up at a $400-$500 proce point until 7nm chips necome available. Its impossible. Impossible. That has to come first before any talk of next gen ia even feasable. And you know what? MS is waiting for the exact same thing.
I want the PS5 to come as much as the next guy....... its just that i know to wait for 7nm chips to start hitting the market first. And i'm not talking about some power point presentation of when AMD (who has no hand in chip foindaries ability to hit 7nm) tjinks they will have their next fen architecture bla bla bla...... those things can realistically take years later than whenever amd originally projected. 16nm chips just hit the market 2 years ago..... wanna guess how long we were stuck on 28nm??
