Are you implying that most people actually heeded that advice and have been avoiding fats and saturated fats for the last 40 years?

Yes. I know a lot of people that are scared of fats and eat huge amounts of pasta and pizza to compensate because, you know, you have to get your calories somehow. Supermarkets are full of low fat junk. I don't know how the situation is in the USA, but the fact that the main pillar of weight loss programs still is "avoid fats" while modern research proves that the main culprit of high fat and high cholesterol in the body is not dietary fat, but farinaceous food instead, and fat actually has the opposite effect, is telling. They just have no idea. Or maybe they're just too ashamed and don't want to tell the world "Sorry, we were wrong until now".

It's incredible how little some people know about nutrition. My aunt has a cabinet full of low fat stuff. She thinks if she doesn't eat fat, she won't get fat. She also said this while chugging on a can of coke.
