Why is it so hard to have simple interaction with other men?

I talk to people all the time, but when I'm in more populated area like NYC or even Cincinnati, not so much. I learned that while not unfriendly, it feels like people in cities are more wary than lower population areas. Even eye contact is different. This is all anecdotal though.
