There has always been a system where the enlightened minority with wealth and power do what ever they can to retain their wealth and power. Capitalism is just a modern word to describe the wealth system maintained by the wealthy elites: monarchy, corporations, religious institutions, governments, wealthy individuals, banks, etc.
