I think even sony must be confused with the success of PS4 which might have thrown off their internal estimate of a new console by 2019, Sony must have expected Ps4 Pro to take off so that they can kill off the base PS4, but that didnt happen, So i think before Ps5 announcement, we will hear the announcement of Base Ps4 ceasing production and PS4 Pro taking its place which will be around 2019.

So Sony could delay PS5 to improve it further, which will also give developers some more time to work on end gen games port for the launch, also PSvr2 (if thats a thing) will greatly benefit from concurrent development, My bet is Fall 2020

Why would Sony kill off the base PS4 when it is perfectly capable of offering PS4/XBO games at 720p -1080p for years to come? They can get into homes for $100 in the next year or two, while adding HDMI 2.1 and a 4K Video chip to make it one of the best streamers on the market. It is an excellent option to combat the Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, and Roku on the low end set top box market.

its because of production yields, producing ps4 and ps4 pro will affect the production of PS5 due the limited number of assembly line and fabrication plants. and those thing can be easily added to ps4 pro slim and make it available at a much cheaper rate. also manufacturing legacy hardware does get expensive over time.. and not to mention those TV box gets hardware updates regularly, almost all of them have 4k features so having a Pro instead of Base model will be a sensible thing to do.
