What's your stance on usage of game/strategy guides while playing?

I never buy them, have been using the occasional walk through since BBS were around. Adventure games used to be my favorite genre, but some of the solutions were pretty nonsensical with easy to miss clues. I guess the first guide I used was for Kings quest 1. I did make my own maps back then.
