So it seems. The fact that some websites report as sold and others as shipped demonstrates confusion and if Nintendo had sold that much, they would clearly and unequivocally have said so. Other brands are more transparent when they have figures.

From a purely logical point of view there is no need to confuse if they have the advantage, in other words the only reason to make this unclear is cause they want to pass "shipped" for "sold to the public" and they are just playing on the confusion here.

So until clearly proven otherwise, it stands to reason to believe these are shipped units and it's up to Nintendo to clear this up.

I'm sorry this is long-winded, but allow me to chime in here :

A ) No, Nintendo is not obscuring the information. This doesn't even make sense. Did you actually look at the site that this information is being communicated from? It's the Nintendo Japan IR and Nintendo Quarterly report document site. It's always reported information this way. Basically for the IR site/document it's just a list sharing the amount of something, with the asterisks displaying the conditions of that product. It's not even a marketing statement, it is literally just a sheet of figures. The fact that you think Nintendo is pulling a stunt means you must have never seen a Nintendo IR page before .... it's always looked like this and nothing about it is malicious. From my memory, beforehand when people would look at the information regarding their current gen consoles, they would refer to it as the amount of shipments. I seem to remember that being the general consensus, that the amount of consoles shown on that site (specifically for current gen consoles) are based on shipments numbers. This never became a discussion for debate until this thread was made, in which case I think it's fairly obvious that the reason people are confused is because the OP said "sold" in the thread title and people started splitting hairs over whether or not this is sold through.

To put it in layman's terms, if he literally just said "shipped" nobody would be arguing about this and you wouldn't have automatically assumed Nintendo is being malicious.

B ) Why would they need to pull a stunt by obscuring language when they're still tracking ahead of the PS4's shipments? The shipments of the PS4 were about 14.4 mil as of November 23rd, a year after the console launched. This means the Switch is already beating it's shipment numbers by .46 million, and it's doing it two months before the PS4 did. Before you reply with all the reasons this doesn't count and PS4 is totally going to kick Switch's ass, it's fine, I don't care and I know the Switch has some things working for it that the PS4 doesn't and that's arguably unfair. I'm just saying that if I was a marketing company, and I shipped more units than the leading console in a set amount of time, I would already have a marketing advantage. There would be no reason to fabricate anything.

C ) Nintendo hasn't even made a statement about the numbers. This is the biggest argument against your "Nintendo is purposely being obscure and malicious!!" point. Nintendo hasn't commented on the numbers - they're just posting quarterly information that websites decided to post about. Also, in buisness the words "sales" and "shipments" are a lot of the times interchangeable, from all companies.

You have a right to be confused and truthfully i'm a little confused as well. I just assumed it was shipped and this was all a big misunderstanding. Strangely enough I've always thought game sales were sold through, so even in my own mind I guess I had an odd perception of the numbers. But I don't know why you're response was too immediately attack Nintendo fans, and then when replied to, later blame Nintendo. Like, step back for a minute and don't be so quick to blame people. It's all okay, it really doesn't matter too much which it is anyways.
