I think it's generally easier to express and digest the truth than a lie. A lie, especially of this magnitude, generally smells fishy.

Yes saying the person pressing false claims of rape will totally get him free... just like it did to several cases of men that were jailed because a girl lied and were free several years later when the girl finally decided to tell the truth, and guess what wasn't jailed for false accusation of crime. In case you don't know she claiming he commited a crime that he didn't is ground for a sue and jail time.
