seems like the general rule of thumb most generations that Nintendo tends to have the highest peak as far as critical ratings at the top (basically the only hardware manufacturer that gets games reviewed at over 95+ on MC), while Sony often seems to have the most titles in the middle range by a fairly large margin.

Kind of a passive aggressive question to include Microsoft in though, considering they have had such a massively fewer amount of first party releases compared to the other two...

I will state that how you look at the history is a bit skewed if you're only looking at critic ratings for 'home' consoles. Nintendo has a massive number of critically acclaimed portable games over every generation, while Sony has muchhhh fewer, and Microsoft obviously almost none (All that pops in my mind are those GBA Rare games).

If you include the 3DS and Vita from last generation, or the PSP and DS for their gen, suddenly Nintendo gets boosted quite a lot comparatively as, again, Nintendo has been the only hardware player who's put massive effort into quality portable titles.  Due to this, I would expect Nintendo to probably come out on top this gen as far as 1st party critical ratings overall. That said then you have the whole debate of if the Switch is considered an 8th or 9th generation console so....
