I'd rather take their word for it now and be surprised later than be hopeful and disappointed later.
I've never heard of anyone lying about such an ambiguous leak though, if it was any substantial detail it'd be one thing, but just "new IP" is such a barebones leak that it doesn't even matter. This kind of thing always gets out but no one ever feels the need to deny it if it's true. To me this just sounds like MS trying to stay ahead of any false expectations that it might create among gamers and then cause disappointment when it's not true.
