Basing my comments below off of how Nintendo handled the Wii, WiiU, and 3DS OS improvements, I expect the following.

  • Bluetooth headphone support?
    • Not coming until future models.
  • Wallpapers/Themes
    • Likely coming.
  • Built in voice chat
    • Likely coming in 2019. I don't think they delayed the online for Switch so they could improve the odd separate app idea. I think they are going to drop that entirely and provide an internal app.
  • Web browser
    • Coming 2018
  • Netflix and other streaming services
    • Coming 2018
  • Folders
    • Coming 2018
  • Lock screen password/PIN
    • Already there? You login when you select your first game/app then it keeps you logged in until you logout. Though they could/should add a feature that forces re-login when switch sleeps. Though I'm basing this off of how it works for me with multiple people's accounts in my system. I am not sure how it works if you only have one account.
  • Camera
    • Not coming. Don't see as important though I'm betting a revision will have one.
  • Backwards compatibility
    • Not coming until future models as they will share the same OS.
  • Downloadable library of old games
    • Coming.
  • Cross Console purchases
    • Not coming until future models as they will share the same OS.
  • Messages (textual?)
    • Why? Just include social media support. Quit building new locked messaging systems when others exist that are far superior. MiiVerse was cute due to the drawing aspect though you can do that via any other social media and the other thing they created on mobile demonstrated that people just want to use FB, IG, SC, TW, etc. All that is needed is a game invite for friends and voice. Textual chat should be normal social media.
  • (+) Simple Friend Mechanism
    • Not coming.
    • Nintendo needs to stop being a nanny. The current system is better than previous, but still is more cumbersome than necessary. Just have a family account with parental controls as an option. Let parents, parent.
I do think that with the move to a more permanent OS structure (in all 3 companies) we'll see far better launches in future systems that are already fully featured and simply continue with yearly new features/updates similar to iOS/Android. (i.e. new consoles will no longer have fully new OS)
Though I want to reiterate the beginning of your OP. Games are all that really matter. ZeldaBOTW plus a good variety of other fun and awesome games are the primary reason Switch is doing so well. The hardware is awesome and a plus and the bare minimum OS just proves the point.
