The reveal of X1X 17 months before release certainly didn't help X1 sales through 2017.
Will be interesting to see how things play out now that customers know there isn't something better right around the corner.
Also, if Microsoft is committed to ending traditional console generations, Xbox One could be around a long time. Easily another decade with hardware updates to improve performance every 4-5 years. In which case, that user base could get quite large by the end of it's run.
