In regards to winning a console generation, it does. Winning a console generation is more about money than sales or at least to me. I thought gamecube was more successful than original xbox because at least gamecube turn in a profit. I'll take 360 over ps3 because ps3 pretty much lost Sony all the money they made off ps1 and ps2. I think Apple is way more successful with iPhone despite selling less than samsung phones because it is way more profitable. All Microsoft has to do for the next console is not mess up the launch and they will win U.S and U.K. over which will mean they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Making money is only part of it. Securing market-share is equally as important, because it also means more games/properties offered to your brand. All three of the big companies know that.
As for "winning" the UK/US over, it's going to take more than a good launch.

With all of Microsoft screwups at begining and doing well in those areas still speaks volume. People are buying playstation 4 to play with their friends. It has that snow ball effect. Not only this buy Microsoft has the biggest IP (Minecraft) underneath their belt they can use as leverage.
