Jumpin said: Animal Crossing isn’t a killer app system seller like Breath of the Wild. But combined with software like Pokemon and others, it will do a huge amount for system sales. It’s a system seller when combined with other games. A fairly big one when you consider the brand recognition it has. |
Eh, in Japan it's a definite killer app. Over there Core Pokemon and Animal Crossing are the #1 and #2 selling game series and Animal Crossing New Leaf was able to increase hardware sales at a comparative rate to Pokemon X&Y. For example, here's the 1st month of hardware sales for when each game was released.
Animal Crossing | Pokemon X&Y |
187,007 | 213,570 |
168,876 | 154,578 |
162,007 | 109,508 |
167,408 | 97,429 |
And here's a comparative chart to what the 3DS sold for the month of November in 2012 when Animal Crossing released compared to a year later.
November 2012 | November 2013 |
187,007 | 81,817 |
168,876 | 70,102 |
162,007 | 84,711 |
167,408 | 110,927 |
To me, Animal Crossing is a killer app because it sells a lot of hardware and software units to female audiences which is something that very few retail games are able to do.
