When Dionysius Exiguus came up with the counting system for millennia in the 6th century he used roman numerals so there wasn't a year zero so 1900 is the last year of the 19th century , and the beginning of the 20th century was the date chosen for Australia to become a sovereign nation and that was Jan 1st 1901'
Where the confusion comes in is the Millennium being celebrated in 2000 and that was really because of prince , public misconception and governments taking the easy way out , but mainly prince.
