Depends on what you consider to be a "fad". In my understanding, DS was the first console to sell on a crazy rate without a fad. Touch screens have been implemented before and after the DS. Having 2 screens just allowed more possibilities for gaming and often improved gaming by utilizing mini maps, inventory, or actually taking advantage of the touch screens physical capabilities. Not to mention, it didn't necessarily have to be used at all. If DS had fad attributes that means that smartphones are fads too...
