We all know PS1 and PS2 only sold because they played CD/DVD's, and the PS3 proved that without the help of the new hot multimedia format (Blu-Ray was luke warm), PlayStation sales weren't all that hot, yaus? So it's strange to see Sony's gaming centric approach push the PS4 to these levels of success previously only seen on consoles with fads at their forefront (like CD, like DVD, like motion controls, touch screen etc.).

Maybe it's something else not game related selling the PS4? Because after all, no console in the history of ever sold the way PS4 is without some out-of-the-norm novelty compared to it's competition. So either PS1/2 sold for the same reason PS4 is, the library, or PS4 is an unseen anomoly in the gaming industry? Interesting stuff.

As others, I would not consider motion controls a fad, but a game changer for the Nintendo.  The Wii did it well, then Nintendo stepped away from it with the Wii U (didn't come with it's own motion controllers, so treated as a second class option) and tanked, and now the switch is doing well (although it could be debated the hybrid has more to do with that than the motion controls, but I think they are both key)...  basically, IMO, motion controls is not a fad but a core component now.

DVD also was not a fad in the true sense, but you could say it is in terms of boosting sales for a console...  as that only really applies to early years of PS2...  after that, there are far better options for the a DVD player...

PS1 sales were hot too (compare to previous gen), and I think PS1 and PS2 both sold well because of their library.  PS3's library was not that great compared to others (not saying it was bad), but the Cell processor really crippled development for it and the library suffered.

I do agree that the best thing that PS4 has going for it is it's exclusives / library without any sort of major hardware advantages over the alternatives.
