You'd probably like it now. I've gone the other way. I loved the blank canvas it gave me to create an inner narrative but with the new additions of story and more 'depth' (for want of a better word), I feel restrained by the game, even though the choices are still in my hands. Progression is now tied to coded narrative and the galaxy map clearly shows you where things are for wealth and race. I loved the game because of the sense of freedom and loneliness. I think most people who play it now would be surprised at the amount of things to do because if you haven't bought it yet you're probably someone who didn't understand the initial promise of the game (not knocking you here). I'd give it a go.
