You're looking at it from the perspective of quantity of money, but you're forgetting the mental aspect of it, the moment of that guy that has made the game in his spare time and just for fun, thinking "will there be someone out there that will be interested in playing it... or even paying for it?". If you tell them just then that they'll have to pay $1,000 to put it on Steam... well, they could have second thoughts. |
Either you want your game to be on the biggest storefront on PC or you don't. Every single developer who wants it will not see some measly $1000 that have a good chance of being refunded in total as any kind of monetary or mental barrier. If they don't think their game, that they worked on thousands of hours and have put all their passion and savings into, is not worth $1000 entry fee they shouldn't even be on the biggest storefront PC has to offer.
And if they do have a problem with that, there are other outlets that care about quality control and don't need a giant barrier of entry to keep out trash because they selectively choose what ends up there.
And yes, I find it ridiculous that we are trying to find a solution for a problem that would be instantly solved if Valve put some actual effort into their store.
